Explore Vision Correction Options by Age Groups

Vision Correction for those who want to experience life beyond glasses and contact lenses include LASIK, PRK and Implantable Contact Lenses. These procedures can address nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Most patients qualify for LASIK which has minimal down time with rapid visual recovery. You can return to work after 1-2 days. PRK may be recommended for those with thin corneas or for those taking part in contact sports. After PRK you can return to work in about 5 days. Expect more gradual visual recovery. For patients who do not qualify for the abovementioned laser vision correction procedures due to thin corneas or very high prescriptions Implantable Contact Lenses may be an option. Rapid visual recovery and the possibility to return to work in 1-2 days makes this a good alternative.

If putting on those readers or bifocals make you feel old you may want to consider PresbyLASIK, Allotex (that can be combined with LASIK) and Presbyopic Implantable Contact Lenses as alternatives. These procedures can address nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and Presbyopia.

Both PresbyLASIK and Allotex (that can be combined with LASIK) may be the first choices because it is minimally invasive. Although down time is minimal, full visual recovery is gradual due to the brain adapting to the new extended focus. For those who do not qualify for these procedures due to thin corneas or very high prescriptions, Implantable Contact Lenses may be an option. Downtime is minimal with easier brain adaptation and slightly faster full visual recovery.

After age 55 lens changes start to occur and lens surgery procedures should be considered. Custom Lens Replacement or cataract surgery with multifocal intra-ocular lenses can give clear spectacle free vision at all distances.

Although 90% of patients do not need spectacles after multifocal lenses, you may choose to still use glasses for more intense tasks like driving or prolonged reading. For patients who have cataracts and do not mind wearing glasses and prefer a lower cost standard cataract surgery is an alternative.

Laser eye surgery fees start from R45 000 for both eyes for young patients. Presbyopia, lens based and more complex procedures cost more.
