FAQs
Is the consultation fee included in the procedure cost?
No, the consultation fee is billed separately from the procedure cost.
The consultation is required to assess your eye health and determine the most suitable treatment plan before proceeding with surgery.
What does the consultation at Sandton Eye Clinic include?
Your consultation fee covers a comprehensive, advanced ocular analysis using state-of-the-art diagnostic technology. Tests and scans are done to assess your overall eye health and determine the most suitable vision correction option for you.
The consultation includes:
- 1. Fundus Examination: A detailed check of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels at the back of the eye to identify any retinal conditions.
- 2. Endothelial Cell Count: Measures the health and density of the cells lining the inner surface of your cornea.
- 3. Tonometry: Measures the pressure inside your eyes to screen for glaucoma and other pressure-related conditions.
- 4. OCT Scan (Optical Coherence Tomography): For explanatory purposes an OCT can be compared to a CT scan of the eye. The OCT provides cross-sectional images of the retina, optic nerve, and internal structures of the eye—essential for early diagnosis.
- 5. Corneal Topography and tomography: Maps the shape and curvature of your cornea, which is critical for procedures like LASIK and diagnosing corneal conditions.
- 6. Anterior segment OCT
- 7. Wavefront Analysis: Detects subtle visual irregularities by analysing how light travels through the eye, helping us assess issues like glare, halos, or reduced contrast.
- 8. Anterior segment OCT: Intra ocular lens measurement: It is used mainly to determine the perfect lens to use during cataract surgery. It provides an image showing anatomical details on a longitudinal cut through the entire eye. Keratometry is the measurement of the curvature of the cornea. Complex calculations take all these factors into consideration to determine the perfect lens for every individual.
These advanced tests ensure a thorough and accurate diagnosis, forming the foundation of your personalized treatment plan
Why don’t medical aids cover laser vision correction?
Most medical aids do not cover refractive procedures such as LASIK, PRK or ICL because they are considered elective or lifestyle procedures.
Some plans may offer partial reimbursement through a refractive benefit, but the full cost is generally the patient’s responsibility.
Is there a payment plan or financing option available?
How can I get an exact procedure quote?
An exact, personalised quote is provided after your consultation, once the surgeon has assessed your eye health and recommended a specific procedure.
How can I pay for my refractive procedure?
- Cash
- EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer)
- Debit or credit card (Visa and Mastercard only)
- MediWallet financing for LASIK, PRK, PresbyLASIK and PresbyPRK (visit www.mediwallet.co.za for pre-approval)
Will my medical aid cover Refractive Cataract Surgery?
Yes, medical aids generally cover Refractive Cataract Surgery if each eye is treated on separate theatre days. At Sandton Eye Clinic, cataract procedures are charged at Discovery Classic Direct tariffs, with co-payments applicable on the premium lenses.
Patients on other medical aids may also have co-payments for both the procedure codes and lens options. Our theatre team will assist with authorisation and confirm the expected co-payments with your medical aid.
Are there any hidden costs I should be aware of?
No, there are no hidden costs. Here’s what you can expect to pay for:
- 1. Consultation – Includes all advanced diagnostic tests.
- 2. Prescription – You’ll receive a prescription before your procedure to fill at your chosen pharmacy.
- 3. Procedure – A personalised quote will be provided after your consultation.
- 4. Follow-up Appointments – Procedure-related follow-ups are complimentary for the first 6 weeks. After that, follow-ups are billed every 3 months.
If you have any other eye diseases these will be handled on a case by case basis and you may be referred to a specialist in that specific area.
Our team will guide you through each step and ensure all costs are clearly explained upfront.
