Dry Eye

What is it?

Dry eye is a condition of inappropriate quality or insufficient quantity of tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older people.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the severity of the condition – some people may only require a humidifier or occasional eye drops, while others may require surgery.

Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops, commonly referred to as artificial tears, or prescribed medication may help relieve dry eyes.

Minor surgical procedures may help decrease the severity of dry eye syndrome. Punctal occlusion using a punctal plug, a small medical device that is inserted into the tear duct (puncta) to block the duct, helps prevent the drainage of liquid from the eye.
