Myths debunked – Routine eye exams

By 22/10/2021January 5th, 2022No Comments

FACT: There are many silent enemies of your eyes: glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and hypertension to name but a few. These diseases steal your vision bit by bit. A routine eye examination can it pick up early enough to prevent vision loss. Other eye issues like needing glasses and eventually readers are often just accepted as being normal. With modern medicine even refractive errors can be corrected.

At birth your paediatrician will do a routine eye screening for your baby and again at 6 months. I recommend an eye exam when your child starts school, every 2-3 years for adults under 40 and yearly when over 65. If you have a family history of eye disease or are diagnosed with an eye disease your ophthalmologist will suggest follow up intervals.

MYTH BUSTED: Eye exams are not necessary unless you are having an eye problem.
